Magazine Launches Outnumber Closures in First Nine Months of 2013:MediaFinder Reports that 138 Magazines Launch and 45 Close
New York City, Oct. 8, 2013 – In the first nine months of 2013, 138 magazines launched, and 45 closed, according to MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. .
The top categories for new launches were “food” and “regional interest” with new titles such as Goodcents Cooking, Edible Long Island and Our Wisconsin. Other new magazines included Celebrate with Woman’s World, Smosh, Conrad Magazine, Milieu, Imaging Edge and Popular Noise.
The number of magazine launches in the first nine months was down from 181 magazines in 2012, to 138 in 2013. For magazine closures, the number slowed from 61 in 2012, to 45 this year, during the same nine month period. Magazines that folded in 2013 include Maryland Life and Home Theater. .
“The slowdown in magazine launches continued, but so did the slowdown in magazine closures,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “Mergers and acquisitions stepped up their pace with deals including Time Inc.’s planned acquisition of the American Express titles, Grind Media’s acquisition of Bonnier’s TransWorld Media titles, and Stagnito’s acquisition of Tesoro Business Media.”
In the business-to-business magazine sector, 17 new titles launched, such as G-code Magazine, during the first nine months of 2013, compared to 25 launches in 2012. During the same period, 11 b-to-b titles closed, including AM News and Game Developer, compared to 12 closures in 2012. In addition, PC World dropped its print edition in 2013.
